Kidneys and Urinary System
Kidneys and Urinary System
Your kidneys and urinary system serve as your body’s drainage system for removing urine. Your kidneys produce urine through the filtration of blood. While the urinary system is used for eliminating waste from the body, regulating blood pressure and blood volume, controlling electrolytes and metabolites levels, and regulating blood pH. They also keep chemicals, such as potassium and sodium, and water in balance. These waste materials can cause problems in the body if they build up. The kidneys also control the fluid and acid-base balance in the body
Aside from filtering waste from the blood and helping in the balance of fluids and other substances in the body, the kidneys carry out other vital functions. The kidneys also:
- Release hormones, such as renin, that help to regulate blood pressure
- Produces erythropoietin, a hormone that aids formation of red blood cells.
- Convert vitamin D into a form that can be used by the body’s tissues.
- Work with corticosteroids (made by the adrenal glands that sit on top of each kidney) that help to regulate kidney function and the body’s inflammatory response system.
Because of the immense functions of the urinary system, any malfunction of the urinary system can prove injurious to the entire body system and lead to death. Below are some disorders that affect the kidney and the urinary system.
Chronic Kidney Disease
Chronic kidney disease is the commonest type of kidney disease. Chronic kidney disease is a long-term condition that doesn’t improve over time. It’s commonly caused by high blood pressure.
Kidney Stones
Kidney stones arise when minerals and other substances in the blood crystallize in the kidneys, causing solid masses (stones). They usually come out of the body during urination.
Polycystic Kidney Disease
Polycystic kidney disease is a genetic disease that leads to numerous cysts growing in the kidney. These cysts affect kidney function and lead to kidney failure.
Glomerulonephritis
Glomerulonephritis is an inflammation of the glomeruli, a small structure in the kidney which filters the blood. Glomerulonephritis can be caused by infections, drugs, or congenital abnormalities.
Urinary Tract Infections
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are bacterial infections of any part of the urinary system. Bladder and urethra infections are the most common. They can be treated easily and don’t usually cause health issues. But they will spread to the kidney and lead to kidney failure if they are left untreated.
